The Rising Tide of Hemp Production in Illinois: Insights and Opportunities

In the Midwest, particularly Illinois, we are witnessing a significant transformation in the agricultural and sustainability landscape through hemp cultivation. As a recently elected at-large board member of the U.S. Hemp Building Association (USHBA), I'm excited for the opportunity to be at the forefront of integrating innovative practices like hempcrete into mainstream use.

Here are some highlights of the day:

Revolutionary Steps in Hemp for Animal Nutrition

A monumental milestone has been achieved with the Hemp Feed Coalition's success in obtaining federal approval for hemp seed meal (HSM) in animal feed, which is set to streamline the supply chain from farmer to feeder.

SIU Cannabis Science Center and Hemp Symposium

Aligned with the SIU Cannabis Science Center's mission, the upcoming SIU Hemp/Cannabis Symposium on September 27th, 2024, is anticipated to be a pivotal gathering for those engaged in the hemp industry.

Industrial Hemp Farmer Study

The Industrial Hemp Farmer Study in Southern Illinois is gathering crucial insights from growers to help shape the future of hemp cultivation. Participants can contribute by reaching out to Dr. Jeb or Amy McMarrow Hunter of The Climate Economy.

Dr. D.K. Lee's Hemp Research at the University of Illinois

The research conducted by Dr. D.K. Lee's team at the University of Illinois, including germplasm collection and agronomic management trials, addresses key challenges in hemp production and supports growers with credible information.

The promise of hemp production in Illinois is bright, supported by ongoing research and growing interest from various sectors.

As we push forward, events like the 2024 Hemp Lobby Day and the work of organizations like the Illinois Hemp Growers Association and the US Hemp Building Association (USHBA.org) continue to shape a more sustainable agricultural and building future. With advancements in hemp for both animal nutrition and construction, the potential for creating toxin-free, affordable homes is vast and exhilarating.

A special thank you to Rachel Berry, President of the Illinois Hemp Growers Association (IHGA), for inviting me to join my first Illinois Department of Agriculture’s Hemp Summit. It’s collaborations like these that enhance our collective efforts and knowledge, pushing us toward a future where sustainability and innovation go hand in hand.
